DNA Testing

I would take a DNA test because it is unobtrusive and would give me an insight as to where my family came from. Firstly, DNA Testing is unobtrusive, all I have to do is give a sample of my hair, saliva, e.t.c., and I will have results sent back to me. Secondly, DNA Testing would give me an insight as to where my family comes from. I want to learn about where my family comes from and DNA testing would let me know. To conclude, I would take a DNA test because it is unobtrusive and would give me an insight as to where my family came from.

Tomorrow, When the War Began Chapter 1-8

Dystopian literature
According to the Science-Fiction Dictionary Brave New Words, dystopian literature is "an imagined society or state of affairs in which conditions are extremely bad, especially in which these conditions result from the continuation of some current trend to an extreme."

Dystopian Synonyms:
1. Apocalypse
2. Antiutopia
3. Pandemonium

Which dystopian novels have you read?
None.

How many others can you name?
Unwind, Hunger Games, The Circle.

If you have read or viewed some dystopia, what are some of the key elements you have noticed?
I find that many dystopian books feature a dictator or some sort of villainous leader.

How do you think this story will be written?
I think this story will be written in first person, following the main character.

Why do you think the story is entitled as it is?
I think it is titled the way it is because it will start with no war, and then as the story progresses, a war will begin.

Where do you think the story will take place?
I think this story will take place during a war.

What time period do you think the story is set in?
I think this story is set around WW1 or WW2 because there is barbed wire and the picture on the cover looks old.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of first person narration?
First person narration allows the author to communicate the main character's feelings in a more effective manner, by putting you in their shoes. On the other hand, you can only communicate the main character's feelings, because you are only seeing the world through the main character's eyes. This means you cannot effectively communicate how other characters feel about the world around them.

What kind of story do you think Ellie is going to tell? Uses evidence from the text to support your answers.
I think that Ellie is going to tell a story about how their trip into the mountains goes wrong. They talk a lot about how they're responsible and want to show their iniatiative and how the trip is safe because they've done it a lot, but I think its just foreshadowing whats to come.

What picture of Kevin do we get in chapter 3?
Kevin is portrayed as a witty though prideful individual in Chapter 3.

Ellie says Fi in like an exotic butterfly-P.33  Do you think this is a fair assessment of her character. Use examples from the text to support your thinking
I think Ellie's description of Fi is a fair assessment of her character. The text describes Fi as having 'perfect teeth,' 'beautiful hair,' 'delicate composure,' and a 'body that would make any man stare.'

What does Corrie’s choice in career say about her character? Pg 46
Corrie wants to be a nurse, meaning that she wants to help and care for others. It is fair to make the assumption that Corrie is a caring individual.

What is the first sign that something is wrong at Ellie’s house? Pg 55
The first sign that something might be wrong at Ellie's house is the eerie quiet as they pull in. Normally, Ellie's dogs would bark and jump around as they pulled in. In fact, the chapter's first words are:
'The dogs were dead. That was my first thought. They didn't jump around and bark when we drove in.'

Do you think the way the teenagers reacted to the realisation that Australia may have been invaded or at war was realistic? Why/why not
The teenagers came back from their hike to see the city they had lived in, stripped of all its former citizens. The only unusual event to have happened between the group leaving for Hell, and coming back, was the groups of jets that had flown over their heads during the night. Jets being military aircraft, I think that the belief their city had been invaded was just.

What possible reasons exist that could spark war or invasion of Australia?
Australia has a lot of land, and little peopel to occupy it. The country has ~3.2 people per square metre of land.

Which people in the group are starting to stand out as leaders, is this surprising? Why/why not?
Robyn begins to stand out as a leader, making rational decisions about what the group should do next. This is surprising because Robyn is portrayed as more unassertive towards the beginning of the story, afraid of convincing her parents to let het go on the trip to Hell.

How is Ellie’s image of Kevin changing in chapter 7 from chapter 3?
Ellie first thought of Kevin as more of a witty, prideful individual. This changes in chapter 7, as Kevin begins to show a more brave, kindhearted version of himself.

Why does the idea of a female soldier surprise Ellie? Pg 83
Not many countries decide to enlist female soldiers, because they are seen as less competent fighters than their male counterparts.

Ellie and Kevin’s quick-thinking allowed them to turn a ride-on lawnmower into a bomb. Was this moral behaviour? Did they do the right thing, or should they have surrendered themselves?
There is no right or wrong answer to this situation, because Ellie and Kevin want to escape the three soldiers, and the three soldiers want to arrest Ellie and Kevin. Obviously, Ellie and Kevin, if given the opportunity, would've taken a route out of the situation that involved the least amount of casualties on either side, but this is not a realistic option. Ellie and Kevin's lives could've been in danger, and the two did what was required to escape.

Homer says, “This is war now, normal rules don’t apply.. They’re the ones who tore up the rule book, not us” Pg 97 What does this say about his character? What do you think of the validity of his opinions?
Homer's statement shows that Homer has a habit of not taking the time to think deeply about his actions. There are rules in war, and assuming that the other side did break them, it is still no valid reason to also commit war crimes.

What pieces of evidence from the book inform the reader that this invasion wasn’t entirely
peaceful? Find at least 3 examples from pages 97-99
p97: Homer, "There'd been some kind of action there. Must have been a bit of a battle I think-..."

p97: Homer goes onto say "... And there were spent cartridges. Hundreds of them. But no bodies or anything." To which Fi added, "But blood, a lot of blood."

p97: Homer, "... But honestly, it was a disaster area. Looked like those American riots on TV. Every shop's had its windows smashed, and there's stuff all over the road and footpaths."
