English: Silent Reading #3

At the beginning of every English period, we spend 10-30 minutes silently reading a book.
For the last two period, I have been reading the 10th book in the "Skulduggery Pleasant" series, "Resurrection."

The premise of the series is that Skulduggery Pleasant and Valkyrie Cain are partners in an investigation agency, (named "The Sanctuary",) based in a world where sorcerers and magic live secretly, side-by-side with humanity. After 5 years of partnership, Valkyrie takes a long, multi-year break from the investigative business, thinking about quitting for good. Fortunately, Skulduggery convinces Valkyrie to re-join the agency so that the two can save the world, but Valkyrie will only stay for 48 hours.

The "Anti-Sanctuary" is an up-and-coming organisation that poses a large threat to the existence of sorcerers, as their plan is to start a war between mortals and magic, annihilating one of the races and sending them to extinction. After a fight between Skulduggery and an unnamed masked figure left Skulduggery hospitalized, Valkyrie has to continue the investigation alone, questioning her morals and wondering what she will do after the 48 hours is up.

After a long period of pondering and self-questioning, Valkyrie realises that an anti-sanctuary would've studied the members of the sanctuary, and that they would need someone inconspicuous. Auger Darkly, the chosen one, written about in prophecy after prophecy, to save the world when it is in danger. There was Auger, then his brother Omen. While he was only born a couple seconds after Auger, he was plump, lazy, and not very good at anything. He was perfect.

It's now Valkyrie's job to make sure Omen gets the information they require, while keeping him out of trouble.

I can't wait to see what happens next.

Our House of Hauora

For Health Education Year 9 we have been learning about the four dimensions of "Hauora:"
- Physical Wellbeing,
- Mental Wellbeing,
- Social Wellbeing,
- And Spiritual Wellbeing.

For revision on the usbject of Hauora, we had to create a "Whare Tapa Wha," which is a house that has four walls and a roof. Each wall represents a dimension of hauora, and it symbolises the human body, as if one wall collapsed, or one dimension was not balanced, the house would topple. For the roof, we were instructed to write the definition of "Te Whare Tapa Wha."

Having finished the project, we ended up with:

Week of Inspiration Maths: Recap

For the last couple weeks, we have been looking at a series of videos based around having an inspirational week of math that shows everybody can be good at maths, and that everybody looks at math and solves problems in different ways.

Along with these videos, there were a set of worksheets to complete using the values and problem-solving techniques shown in the videos. These worksheets often reqiured creative problem-solving and outside-of-the-box thinking.

These videos taught us that anybody can learn maths if they put their mind to it, that speed is not important in math, and that there are many ways to solve one problem in math.

Dropping Balls for Science

The Scientific Method:

Aim:
To measure the bounce height of table tennis balls, when dropped from different heights.

Hypothesis:
The higher up we drop the table tennis ball, the higher up it will bounce.

Equipment:
- Metre long ruler
- Table tennis / tennis ball

Method:
1. Set a metre ruler down, 0cm at the bottom, 100cm at the top.
2. Drop the table tennis balls from different heights in ascending order.
3. Monitor, measure, and write down the bounce height of each table tennis ball when dropped.
4. Test each height a minimum of three times to get an average.

Results:

Height
1
2
3
Average
2m
21cm
20cm
21cm
20.6cm
1.5m
18cm
17cm
19cm

1m
20cm
19cm
20cm
8.6cm
0.5m
8cm
9cm
9cm
8.6cm

Discussion:
I believe that when you drop a ball from a steep height, it gathers more momentum before it reaches the ground, therefore giving it more force to bounce higher.
There is a trend of increase when dropping balls from different heights in ascending order.
There also seems to be a large jump from 1m/0.5m to 1.5m/2m.

Conclusion:
Our hypothesis was accurate.
The higher the height you drop the table tennis ball from, the higher up it will bounce.

English: Silent Reading

To start every English lesson we spend 10-30 minutes silently reading a book of our choosing.
For today, I have read 9 pages from Skulduggery Pleasant: Resurrection, the 10th book in the Skulduggery Pleasant book series.

The premise of the series is that Skulduggery Pleasant and Valkyrie Cain are partners in an investigation agency, based in a world where sorcerers and magic live secretly, side-by-side with humanity. After 5 years of partnership, Valkyrie takes a long, multi-year break from the investigative business, thinking about quitting for good.
