Aim:
To separate the different pigments in inks using paper chromatography.
Equipment:
Ink pens, test tube, a strip of paper, chromatography solution.
Method:
1. Cut a piece of filter paper long enough to reach the bottom of your test tube.
2. Rule a line in pencil, 2m from the bottom of the paper.
3. Fill the test tube with 1cm of chromatography solution. (water)
4. Place a dot of ink above the ruled line.
5. Fold over test tube and place in solution.
6. Wait and observe.
7. Repeat with 2 other colours.
Results:
The water rose up the paper, eventually reaching the ink blobs we created using felts, resulting in a weird moving blob effect when it came into contact with the ink. Colours made out of other colours (Purple: red and blue / Orange: Red and yellow, e.t.c.), because the two colours would separate and run along the paper. Also, colours often darkened when dissolved in the mobile phase.
Discussion:
Chromatography, meaning 'colour writing' in Greek, is the idea of separating a mixture. The mixture is dissolved in a fluid, (Water,) called the "mobile phase." The mobile phase carries the mixture along another material (Paper), called the "stationary phase." This kind of chromatography is called 'Paper Chromatography.'

Evaporation
Aim:
1. Set up the bunsen burner, tripod, and gauze mat. Don't place the bunsen burner under the tripod yet.
To separate a solute from a solvent in a solution using evaporation
Equipment:
- Copper sulfate solution,
- 250 ml beaker,
- Heatproof mat,
- Evaporating basin,
- Gauze mat,
- Bunsen burner,
- Tripod.
Method:

2. Add approximately 50ml of hot water to your beaker and place it on top of the tripod, on the gauze mat.
3. Add enough copper solution to quarter fill the evaporating basin.
4. Carefully place the evaporating basin on top of the beaker.
5. Light your bunsen burner. Open the air hole and gently push the Bunsen burner under the tripod.
6. Heat the solution until most of the solvent has evaporated and crystal solute are forming.
7. Turn off your bunsen burner.
Observations:
Upon the copper sulfate solution evaporating, a ring of blue crystals began to form around the top of the evaporating dish.
Results:
Upon finishing the experiment and leaving half of the copper sulfate solution to evaporate further in the sun, all of the solution crystalised, leaving a shiny blue.
Discussion:
Evaporation happens when molecules/atoms escape from a liquid, transforming into a vapour.
The solute, the copper sulfate, using the solvent, water, evaporated, leaving behind a series of blue crystals, many interconnected with each other.

A Recap of the last Six Weeks in Digital Technology
For the last six weeks, we have had two periods of DTE1 every week, in which we have created websites and infographics, studied ergonomics and cybersafety, and created artifacts to leave on the web.
All images are linked.
Week One
All images are linked.
Week One
For week one, we structured, designed and set up a personal website for us to archive our work on the following weeks. While it is not published yet, I have titled the site "Greg's Gas Station Burger Joint," and have structured the header and home page about it.
During week two, we learned about and studied ergonomics. I decided to create an infographic about the ergonomics of typing, as typing is a skill becoming more and more useful in a growing and evolving digital world. Incorrect typing posture can be detrimental to a person's health, and I find it important to make sure everyone is educated on why good typing posture is important.
Week Three: Let's Go Phishing!
There were 4 levels,
Kind Kingdom,
Kind Kingdom was about spreading kindness to victims of cyber-bullying, by spreading kind words and liking their posts.
Reality River,
Reality River was about phishing attempts, scam attempts, and how to avoid them/stay safe around them.
Mindful Mountain,
Mindful Mountain is about being mindful of who you share your posts and information to.
Tower of Treasure,
Tower of Treasure is about keeping your information to yourself, using strong passwords e.t.c.
I had already played Interland, in Year Eight, though it was nice to have a recap and a refresher on some of the most important values and practices of being cyber smart.
Week Four: Digital Citizenship, Global Change for Good, and Cybersmart.
During week four, we spent our time exploring the Maniakalaani Cybersmart website, exploring what it means to be a Cyber-Citizen. I decided to structure my infographic with a series of summaries of each webpage, to show what the website has to offer. I included an image that related to the webpage and tried to make it as easy-to-read as possible. The point of an infographic is that it's supposed to display information in an easy-to-read format, and yet many infographics prioritize interesting looks over important information and user-experience. (U-X.)I like having creative freedom over my work, and Digital Technology gives me the freedom I need to produce high-quality work that I am passionate about.
I can't wait for the robotics section of this course, and hope that you will take it too.

Bellwork : Our choice on what to work on.
Today in English, for a change, we used the first fifteen minutes of the period to do an activity of our choosing, as long as it related in some way to literacy.
I decided to work on my typing skills, as while I can type upward of 150wpm somewhat accurately, I feel as if taking it slow and working on my key placement will help me develop my confidence in using computers further.
Stats:

Diluting Potassium Permanganate.
Aim: To make a dilution series to investigate Concentration.
Equipment:
A potassium permanganate crystal,
Six large test tubes,
Tweezers,
A plastic transfer pipette,
A test tube rack,
10 ml measuring cylinder..

A plastic transfer pipette,
A test tube rack,
10 ml measuring cylinder..
Method:
1. Place the six test tubes in a test tube rack.
2. Label the rack with numbers 1-6.
3. Using a measuring cylinder, fill test 1 with 10 ml of water. Fill the remaining test tubes with 5mls of water.
4. Using your tweezers, add a single crystal of potassium permanganate to test tube 2.
5. Gently shake test tube until the crystal has dissolved.
6. Using the transfer pipette, carefully remove 5mls from test tube 1, and pour it into test tube 2.
7. Rinse the transfer pipette thoroughly to ensure that no purple solution remains.
8. Gently shake test tube 2 and repeat the transfer process, transferring exactly 5ml of solution from test tube 2 to test tube 3.
9. Rinse the pipette again and repeat the transfer process into test tubes 4, 5, and 6.
Results:
As you can see in the picture, as the liquid was diluted more and more, the colour went from a concentrated black to light pink.
Discussion:
Having added the solute (Potassium permanganate crystal) to the solvent (water), it immediately started to evaporate, turning the water a blackish purple.
It was difficult at times to get an exact measurement of 5ml using the pipette, due to it only going up to 3mL. Instead of just measuring an immediate 5ml, we had to add two measurements together, which might have made the test results inaccurate.
I believe that if we continued to dilute the water for a much longer period of time, it would've gone from the light pink back to a transparent, colourless liquid.
Conclusion:
Diluting a coloured liquid in water lessens the presence of colour.

Summary of Silent Reading
Today for English we were to silently read a book for 20 minutes, then summarising it into it's main points.
I decided to read Skulduggery Pleasant: Resurrection.
Upon reading this book, you will be exposed to:
- Mentally torn protagonists, questioning the morality of their quest.
- An elaborate, though easy to grasp plot.
- An abstract, though effective writing style, which uses
- Jokes in, and out of dialog to ease tension in certain moments.
I highly reccomend the Skulduggery Pleasant series, and Derek Landy is a great author.
